The
Garage
The Garage is Microsoft’s Innovation hub for accelerating impactful ideas from concept to real-world value. We cultivate a culture of experimentation, creativity, and execution by empowering teams to innovate with confidence and purpose.
At the heart of our work is The Intelligence Lab - a hands-on space dedicated to exploring advanced AI, agentic tools, and emerging AI models. The Lab enables teams to experiment and prototype ideas using both first party and third party tools in a unique sandboxed environment. Where relevant, teams can also create simple prototypes using on-site 3D printers and robotics capabilities available in our maker space.
Beyond experimentation, we actively support innovation through intrapreneurship programs and project coaching. Our unique methodology supports intrapreneurs with framing problems, validating assumptions, refining solutions, and preparing initiatives for scaling and adoption to deliver business impact.
A key pillar of The Garage is AI skilling and capability building. Through structured workshops and immersive learning experiences, we help employees build practical AI literacy and confidently integrate AI into their day-to-day work and innovation efforts.
We also run the world’s largest Hackathon and ongoing innovation sprints that bring together diverse employees, customers, and partners to collaborate, ideate, and build solutions in a focused, high-energy setting. These experiences are designed to unlock creativity, accelerate learning, and deliver tangible outcomes in a short time frame.
VoiceTyping++ was developed as an employee-led project facilitated by The Garage during the 2021 Microsoft Hackathon, with the goal of enabling computer use for people with disabilities, and specifically those with limited utilization of their hands. The main ambition was to develop a new interface that would enable better use of dictation services and editing with a single finger/or gaze control. This innovative voice recognition project was inspired by one particular user, photographer Ronen Akerman, who was struggling with ALS, and has since evolved into a model holding the potential to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of users.

The Garage is more than an innovation space, here on campus. It’s a community of thousands of Microsoft employees around the globe who share a passion for creating, innovating and hacking. This is a community where you can learn from experimentation and help us apply those learnings to the rest of Microsoft.

Diversity & Inclusion Culture
Microsoft is driven by the belief and recognition that diversity is not only a moral value but also a business necessity. At Microsoft, we have the opportunity – and the obligation – to foster a collective movement towards greater inclusion through our actions. Creating an environment where people can be their authentic selves in alignment with our company values is a commitment built into the work each one of us does every single day, no matter our title, level, or role.
At Microsoft Israel R&D Center (ILDC), the work of diversity and inclusion is about having intention in all we do. We strive to recruit, retain, develop, and invest in talented people that represent a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, skills, and experiences- and we’re proud to share women representation in increasing at all levels.

The Israeli hi-tech ecosystem is filled with entrepreneurs, engineers, leaders, and innovators who share our vision of promoting D&I. By developing relationships with diverse technological communities and by partnering with stakeholders, we advance the ecosystem around us. Promoting STEM education and encouraging diverse recruitment are just some examples of what we work on for and with the community.
Diversity is Our Power
On a global, national, and local level, we work with and support non-profit organizations that are working to advance diversity and inclusion in the tech industry—and in workplaces worldwide through research, benchmarking, program development and advocacy platforms. We host meetups, workshops, and training seminars aimed at students and developers to promote technological and entrepreneurial discourse and to create networking opportunities.
We believe in the transformative power of engaging many different perspectives and seek to foster a diverse tech community wherever possible. In Israel specifically, we maintain several ongoing projects to tap into minority communities – whether Arab, Ultra-Orthodox, Special Needs, or Women – such as mentoring programs, tech conferences, skills workshops, and buddy candidate programs. Equal representation for the entire population of Israel is our goal.
Together, we can create real change!
